Publisher’s thoughts regarding traveling with your pet:
by Lynda Green
Talk with your veterinarian to discuss any concerns you may have. Discuss where you are going to be traveling to, and ask about any diseases that may be prevalent. Will you need to take additional precautions?

Take a copy of your pet’s health records in the event of an emergency. Take a moment to write down where the local animal hospitals are and what their hours of operation are. Are they open during off hours for emergencies?,p> Make sure that your pet has their identification tags on. Take current pictures with you in the event your dog runs away. A picture is worth a thousand words.

Use a restraining device to keep your dog safe while traveling in the car. There are numerous restraints and safety measures that you can take to ensure a safe trip. Some include: (1) Crate – probably the safest way to travel with your dog when properly used; (2) seatbelts; and (3) car seats. Do your research, go to your local Leone’s or Petco and look into what would work best for you and your dog.

When traveling, be sure to make rest stops frequently so your dog can relieve himself. Keep a supply of fresh water and give him a drink during his break.

First Aid: If you are not familiar with basic first aid for your pet, do some research.

• Books – Your library will have books that have instructions on basic first aid for your pet. It’s a good idea to purchase a book of your own to keep with you.

• First Aid Kits – You can either design your own first aid kit, or purchase one at your local pet store. Visit Leone’s and Petco to see what books and first aid kits and supplies they have available.
