Why adopt a greyhound? What makes one such a great pet? We all know adopting a pet is a wonderful way to bring a new friend into our lives, especially since there are so many great animals out there that need good homes. But, why adopt a greyhound?
Some reasons are obvious to anyone who has seen an adopted greyhound in public. Being “professionals” entering retirement, they are used to being handled and walked and do so quietly, thus making theirs owners “look good”. These dogs come to your home as adults; therefore, there is no “puppy stage.” Yet most have a long life ahead of them, frequently exceeding a decade, despite them spending their puppy years in training or at work. And of course, they often make good chick/guy/any-attention-at-all magnets, as, lets face it, the greyhound is a striking animal.
But, more importantly, the greyhound makes a great pet because it is just good-natured, laid back, low maintenance friend. The typical greyhound offers few if any health issues. Its short coat requires minimal upkeep, and being an indoor dog, a greyhound tends to be very a clean pet. Its temperament is quiet, affectionate and gentle. Many retired greyhounds go on to serve as therapy dogs for nursing homes or hospitals due to their kind personalities.
In fact, there are so many reasons to adopt a greyhound, we couldn’t list them all. But, we all know, there has to be a “catch”. What is that catch? First, a greyhound must never be let off the leash to run. Second, due to its quiet nature and fondness for people, it does not make a great watchdog. And the third? They can be addicting! Many a greyhound adopter owner finds himself in short time adopting another out of the sheer joy of being around them! So, why adopt a greyhound? Perhaps a better question is - why on earth not?
