Locate pet-friendly apartment communities through the listings and ads included in this issue of Pets Over Pittsburgh.
Ask about restrictions and qualifications with regard your pet. Landlords will frequently require your pet to be spayed or neutered, and require annual proof of current vaccinations. There are generally other restrictions such as the number, type, size and breed of pets allowed.
Ask to see a copy of the pet rules (usually in the form of a lease addendum). This will let you know, in advance, what is expected of you and other pet owners. It may also outline your financial obligations such as pet deposits and pet fees.
Ensure that the area(s) available for walking your pet is sufficient for the size of the apartment community. You should walk these areas during your visit to evaluate their condition. You will want to ensure that the areas are clean of waste so that your pet is not subjected to unsanitary conditions. There should also be adequate drainage and vegetation so that your pet doesn’t get muddy during your walks.
Some communities now provide stations with plastic bags and trash containers to make it more convenient for you to clean up after your pet.
Ask whether there is a leash-free area at the community, or nearby, so that your dog will have a place to socialize and play with others.
Do not make a commitment to rent without seeing the actual apartment you will be living in. Landlords sometimes restrict pet owners to less desirable apartments. You may not mind sacrificing a good view, but carpeting that is in poor condition will probably not be acceptable.
Always visit prospective apartment communities late at night to assess the exterior lighting and parking areas. You want to make sure that there is enough lighting to provide some level of comfort when you have to walk your pet after dark. You also want ensure that there is adequate parking available, and that cannot be determined during the day while many people are away at work.
Once you find your ideal apartment home, remember that you must demonstrate responsibility as a pet owner. Landlords that have bad experiences related to pets are likely to further restrict or exclude future rentals to pet owners.
