How to Determine Your Dog’s Age in Human Years

The classic formula for calculating a dog’s age is “one dog year equals seven human years.” Actually, dogs mature much earlier in their lifetime than humans do. A more accurate formula for comparing your dog’s life to that of a human is:
- 1st year of a dog’s life = 15 human years
- 2nd year of a dog’s life = 10 human years
- 3rd year and each year after = 3 human years
This formula is based on the average life span for dogs.
Some examples using this formula are:
• Three year old dog = 28 human years (15 + 10 + 3)
• Eight year old dog = 43 human years (15 + 10 + 18)
