Choke Chain Hazard
by Ted Green
One of our readers, Susan G., is a serious dog lover! She has two Jack Russell Terriers that mean the world to her. Susan told us that we should get the word out to our readers about the very real danger of leaving a choke chain on your dog. There have been some incredibly tragic accidents, resulting in the serious injury and death of dogs whose owners left choke chains on them.

While researching information for this article, it became quite clear that the use of choke chains for dog training is a very controversial subject among professional trainers. Some advocate their use, as long as they are used properly. Others will tell you that they should never be used because of possible pain or injury to the dog. But there is one thing about choke chains that all dog trainers and veterinarians do agree on. They will all tell you that they should never be used when the dog is not on a leash, with the owner or trainer at the other end of it. Thousands of dogs have died from accidental strangulation due to choke chains having been caught on objects, crates, fences and even on the teeth of other dogs while playing!

PLEASE do not leave a choke chain on your best friend as a collar. Your dog is completely dependent on you to do the right thing to protect it from the potential dangers involved in this practice.
